Zaheer Popo

‘Zaheer Popo is an accomplished organist, conductor, and educator whose work spans church music, the concert stage, and the classroom. He has collaborated with a wide range of ensembles, including the Texas Southern University Choir, the Olathe Community Orchestra, and the Queen City Chorale. Equally at home in recital, worship, and collaborative performance, his programming spans the full spectrum of the organ repertoire, from the works of Bruhns and Buxtehude to the Gospel Preludes of William Bolcom.

Popo has held multiple Directorships and Organist positions in the United States and abroad. He is currently in the final stages of the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance at the University of Kansas, where he studies with James Higdon. He has appeared in recitals throughout the region and has participated in masterclasses with internationally renowned organists, including Olivier Latry, Nicole Keller, and Baptiste-Florian Marle-Ouvrard. In addition to his performing career, Popo has presented on congregational song and church music, including a lecture at the Symposium on Congregational Song hosted by the Springfield Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

At the University of Kansas, Popo has taught private organ instruction and has served as the Associate Director of the KU Bales Chorale. While at Missouri State University, he taught courses in French.

A native of St. Lucia, Popo holds a Master of Musicin organ performance and a Master’s of Applied Second Language Acquisition from Missouri State University. Additionally, he holds the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music and the Associate’s diploma from the London College of Music. He has also earned professional certifications from the American Guild of Organists and the Royal College of Organists. His achievements have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Hilton Cliff Music Award (2011), the Keifer Young Award (2019–2022), and Third Place in the 2022 Strader Competition.’
